Background of the study
Human resource management (HRM) in healthcare institutions plays a crucial role in determining the quality of care provided to patients. Effective HRM practices in hospitals, including recruitment, training, retention, and performance management, are essential to ensuring that healthcare workers are competent, motivated, and capable of delivering high-quality care (Adeyemi & Olayemi, 2023). However, Nigerian healthcare institutions, particularly hospitals, face significant challenges related to HRM, including high turnover rates, low employee morale, and inadequate training programs (Ali et al., 2024).
In Kaduna State, these challenges are particularly pronounced due to limited funding for healthcare facilities, which affects the recruitment of skilled healthcare professionals and the ability to retain them (Adamu et al., 2025). Additionally, hospitals often struggle with poor working conditions, insufficient professional development opportunities, and inadequate performance evaluation systems, all of which contribute to low job satisfaction and decreased productivity among healthcare workers (Musa et al., 2023).
This study seeks to evaluate the HRM practices in hospitals in Kaduna State and examine how these practices influence the quality of healthcare services.
Statement of the problem
Human resource management in hospitals in Kaduna State is confronted with various issues, including inadequate staffing, high turnover rates, and poor training programs. These challenges hinder the ability of hospitals to deliver quality healthcare and maintain a stable workforce. Despite the critical role of HRM in healthcare, there is limited research on the specific HRM practices in Nigerian hospitals and their impact on healthcare service delivery. This study aims to address this gap by assessing HRM practices in hospitals in Kaduna State and evaluating their effectiveness in improving healthcare outcomes.
Objectives of the study
To assess the human resource management practices in hospitals in Kaduna State.
To identify the challenges faced by hospitals in Kaduna State in managing healthcare personnel effectively.
To recommend strategies to improve human resource management practices in hospitals in Kaduna State.
Research questions
What are the human resource management practices in hospitals in Kaduna State?
What challenges do hospitals in Kaduna State face in managing healthcare personnel?
What strategies can be adopted to improve human resource management practices in hospitals in Kaduna State?
Research hypotheses
Effective human resource management practices significantly improve the quality of healthcare services in hospitals in Kaduna State.
Inadequate training programs and high turnover rates are significant barriers to effective human resource management in Kaduna State’s hospitals.
Improving HRM practices, including training and retention strategies, will significantly enhance healthcare service delivery in hospitals in Kaduna State.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study will focus on hospitals in Kaduna State and examine the human resource management practices within these institutions. The research will be limited to a selection of hospitals in the state, and findings may not be generalized to all Nigerian hospitals. Data collection will primarily rely on interviews and surveys with hospital administrators and healthcare workers.
